  • Barbacks help keep the bar running smoothly! This role is responsible for restocking supplies, cleaning glassware, and maintaining the bar area’s cleanliness.

    Essential Duties + Responsibilities
    • Welcome guests, provides exemplary service for guests, and provides accurate information about the menu, events, and the company.
    • Provide support primarily to the bartenders. Prepare garnishes, Stock and re-stock the bar with garnishes, beverages, glassware, napkins, etc. throughout the shift. Replace kegs. Refill water stations. Collect glassware, dishes, and bus tables. Wash glassware and other dishes.
    • Arranges furniture and sets tables for regular use, events, private reservations. May assist the kitchen staff in preparing food and washing dishes as needed.
    • Reviews inventory, anticipates needs, and reports inventory needs to bartenders and/or management.
    • Complies with company policies and local, state, and federal laws.
    • Maintains a sanitary working environment. Wash glassware and other dishes, cleans bar area and other areas as required. May be required to assist in cleaning the kitchen and other areas of the restaurant.
    • Work collaboratively to create a positive community environment for guests and fellow employees.
    • Attend regularly scheduled employee meetings and other meetings as required.
    • May be required to take photos and assist with marketing needs.
    • Complete other tasks as assigned.

    Basic Qualifications
    • 1 to 3 years of experience as a barback, busser, dishwasher, or similar role.
    • Ability to perform all tasks and requirements of the job
    • Excellent communication and teamwork skills
    • Ability to effectively solve problems and multi-task in high-paced environments
    • At least 21 years of age.

    Preferred Qualifications
    • 2+ years of experience as a barback in a high-volume full service bar.
    • Possession of a valid California Food Handler Card and valid CPR and First Aid Certification is a plus.
    • Successful completion of the Department of Alcohol Beverage Control’s LEAD Program, Responsible Beverage Service (RBS) Training, or similar program within the last 5 years is a plus.

    Knowledge
    • Familiar with coffee, tea, beer, wine, liquor, and other beverages. Some understanding of food and beverage pairings. When needed, is able to educate and assist guests in ordering using this knowledge is a plus.
    • Familiarity of coffeehouse, bar, and restaurant supplies and equipment operation and cleaning such as, but not limited to: espresso machines, keg taps, soda guns, small dishwashers.
    • Education directly related to the job is a plus.
    • Understanding of Santa Cruz, especially of the local LGBTQ+ history and community, is a plus.

    Language Skills
    Able to communicate in English.
    • Ability to communicate in Spanish, American Sign Language, or another language that is commonly used in the Santa Cruz area is a plus.

    Physical Demands

  • Bartenders craft an array of beverages – everything from lattes to cocktails and create a warm and inviting atmosphere.

    Essential Duties + Responsibilities

    • Prepare alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages for guests. Serve multiple guests at bar and via servers, take orders, handle monetary transactions, and follow up with guests for their needs. Ability to anticipate guests’ needs and act accordingly.
    • Responsible for opening or closing the restaurant, ensuring security systems are in place. May be responsible for arranging furniture and setting tables for regular use, events, private reservations.
    • Reviews inventory, anticipates needs, and reports inventory needs to management. May be responsible for ordering inventory and supplies.
    • Complies with company policies and local, state, and federal laws.
    • Maintains a sanitary working environment. May be required to wash glassware and other dishes, cleans bar area and other areas as required.

  • Cooks whip up delicious plates of poutine, crepes, cauli-wings, and more scrumptious bites.

    • Assist in the curation of menus for special events and private reservations.

    • Complies with company policies and local, state, and federal laws.
    • Maintains a sanitary working environment. Washes dishes, cleans kitchen, and other areas as required.
    • Work collaboratively to create a positive community environment for guests and fellow employees.

    • May be required to take photos and assist with marketing needs.
    • May be responsible for training and leading fellow employees. May be day-of contact or provide support for "Kitchen Takeover” events.

  • Event Assistants help turn regular ol’ events into positively unforgettable experiences. These folks provide logistical support, help create events, take photos, and aid on the day of.

    Essential Duties + Responsibilities
    • Welcome guests, provides exemplary service for guests, and provides accurate information about the menu, events, and the company. Handles transactions, sells and checks tickets.
    • Provides support with events, such as but not limited to trivia nights, drag shows, and art markets. May assist in the planning and curation of events.
    • Prepares event space. Arranges furniture and sets tables for events and private reservations. Assists in technical support during events such as lighting or sound. Ensures sound does not exceed limitations per company policies and local ordinances. Takes photos during events (using a digital camera provided/owned by the company). May provide direct support to event host or performers, which may occur backstage or onstage such as collecting props or tips.
    • Takes photos and assists with marketing needs, which may include designing or distributing flyers and other marketing materials.
    • Complies with company policies and local, state, and federal laws.
    • Maintains a sanitary working environment.
    • Work collaboratively to create a positive community environment for guests and fellow employees.
    • Attend regularly scheduled employee meetings and other meetings as required.
    • May be required to review inventory of event supplies, anticipate needs, and report needs to management.

  • The Security Crew Members keep our community safe by welcoming guests and keeping an eye out for unneighborly behavior.

    Essential Duties + Responsibilities
    • Welcome guests, provides exemplary service for guests, and provides accurate information about the events and the company as needed.
    • Maintains a safe environment for guests, fellow workers, and community. Checks IDs, provides stamps or wristbands, checks bags or other personal belongings of guests. Maintains flow of entry and restricts entry as needed. Removes trespassing individuals. Respond to emergency situations to provide necessary assistance to guests and fellow employees. Protect the company's assets relative to theft, assault, fire, and other safety issues. Provides written reports of security issues to management at end of each shift.
    • Patrols interior and exterior of the property. Responds to concerns from fellow workers and guests appropriately. May be required to patrol radius around the business or escort patrons, performers, and fellow workers to their vehicles. May be responsible for opening or closing the restaurant, ensuring security systems are in place.
    • Complies with company policies and local, state, and federal laws.
    • Maintains a sanitary working environment.

    • Valid registration with the California Bureau of Security and Investigative Services.

    Knowledge
    • Working knowledge of security systems equipment, radios, and other relevant equipment. Familiarity with other equipment throughout the company and awareness of prospective safety issues.
    • Awareness and knowledge of signs of biases that may lead to harm.
    • Education directly related to the job is a plus.

About the Hiring Process

  • Applications are now open! They will close once 50 applications have been submitted or on May 1st, whichever comes first. All applications will be kept on file for at least one year.

    The Neighbor’s Pub is expected to open in summer 2024. The exact date of the soft opening is to be determined due to the permitting process and time it will take to revamp the space. Given the fluidity of this date, the hiring timeline is also a bit fluid.

    Applicants who are invited to interview will receive a response sometime in April or May. Interviews will likely take place in May.

    The start date for employment will be about a week or two prior to the soft opening. All staff will gather for an intensive training to gain and improve our work-related skills, learn the company policies and procedures, complete required training from the state and federal government, and of course, build community with each other. The training is paid and is expected to be scheduled across 2 to 3 days.

    This timeline is subject to change.

  • Regular employees include barbacks, bartenders, baristas, cooks, event assistants, security, and servers. These roles will begin as part-time, with approximately 5 to 25 hours worked per week.

    Independent contractor agreements may be available to the Launch Crew, handy person, cleaning crew, performers, and other roles on a case-by-case basis.

  • Employees will be paid an hourly wage of approximately $17 - $25 per hour, depending on the role and experience. Many roles will also receive tips.
